at college, charmed bro. Crawford's congregation today with an elegant sermon - Did you attend the funeral of Dr. Iremeus Prime? You know he was the senior editor of the N. Y. Observer. I miss his letters which used to come every week. What a contrast in his burial, & the excitement & parade & expense over Grant, who was only greater in a worldly point of view because circumstances worked in his favor - But I dare say the reception on the "Other Side" was in Dr. Prime's favor. Aug. 3d We had lots of company yesterday - Andrew, cousin Sarah & Miss Venie & Annie & Mrs. Bell. They asked after you & Nannie. Mac & Mr. Ball just returned from a tour in the country. They passed Mrs. Armfield's this A. M. & saw Miss Roxie out in the yard. They say Mrs. Armfield has an elegant residence. Make (???) Michaux is at home - Lucy & Sarah start tomorrow on a trip to Franklin. Sarah begged me to go with them, but I couldn't. This is one of the meanest pens I ever wrote with. My cook borrowed it of Bettie when I had company & ruined it -- & she can't write much better than a rabbit. Her beau is here
