Title: Fragment of letter from James Southgate to unknown, circa 1885
Author: James Southgate
Date: 1885
Note: In this fragment of a letter, James Southgate takes his daughter on an imaginary walking tour of Durham where he visits with her friends, neighbors and town luminaries. Southgate reports on the news and gossip of the day: Durham's tobacco entrepreneurs, Blackwell&Goodson dissolved their partnership, Dr. A.G. Carr sold his stock of medicines to the druggists Vaughan&Tenny, Mrs. Battle struggles while her husband Dr. Lee W. Battle seeks treatment for his opium habit at the Asylum, and the Lehman family purchases a new piano. Additionally, Southgate supplies his daughter with tidbits of news concerning the Halliburton, Lyon, Smith, Perry, Phillips, Lockhart, Watts, Howerton, Farthing, Angier, McCabe, Thomas, Walker, Betts, Burton, Cooper, Rowland, Miller, Fuller, Gammon, Hopkins, Day, Mohsberg, Levy, Fawcett, Wilkerson, and Dalby families.

Hudson river and knowing the Dr as I do, I would not be surprised to hear of any strange thing he might do. Mrs Carr + the boys keep well and the boys ride around with the Dr as usual and often to the annoyance of his patients. Bob Lyon+ family are well- Mrs S was at S.S. such a morning as this. Her Canary is the finest singer in town. There is a Jno Smith Jr about 3 weeks old at the next house and mother + child are doing well, though she has been quite sick. Mr Jno W is a happy father. I see Mr Gammon semi-occasionally and he reports his family well- Mrs G drops in to ask after Miss Annie. Mrs Day is well + was here to spend the afternoon last week- She is distressed that Mollie is married + gone to Mrs Hopkins' to board rather than stay with her- Mr Pope promised Mrs H he wd bring his wife there + so it is. Poor Jim Day gives up to drink much as ever and 2 weeks ago the police picked him up off the pavement in front of Moreheads Bank + took him home. This is a very sad case. Grandpa + Grandma Zack seem more deeply interested in your case than any other of your friends [A day does not pass] but they enquire particularly after you. They keep tolerably well but complain much- I have been trying to get them both to go to the Retreat for treatment. It might do some good if you would write them to come [?]. The jail we wont visit, as I am not interested in the inmates. Mrs Mohsberg is very much better + gives me impudence any time. I frequently ask if she has written home. If not I tell her I'll have it to do or her mother will be uneasy. Mrs Levy + Lehman are both well + their families- Mrs Lehman has recently bought a piano + came up for Cats to go "down dare" to try it. Mrs Levy cant be out done and also talks of buying a piano but dont [sic] want the same make as
