Title: Fragment of letter from James Southgate to unknown, circa 1885
Author: James Southgate
Date: 1885
Note: In this fragment of a letter, James Southgate takes his daughter on an imaginary walking tour of Durham where he visits with her friends, neighbors and town luminaries. Southgate reports on the news and gossip of the day: Durham's tobacco entrepreneurs, Blackwell&Goodson dissolved their partnership, Dr. A.G. Carr sold his stock of medicines to the druggists Vaughan&Tenny, Mrs. Battle struggles while her husband Dr. Lee W. Battle seeks treatment for his opium habit at the Asylum, and the Lehman family purchases a new piano. Additionally, Southgate supplies his daughter with tidbits of news concerning the Halliburton, Lyon, Smith, Perry, Phillips, Lockhart, Watts, Howerton, Farthing, Angier, McCabe, Thomas, Walker, Betts, Burton, Cooper, Rowland, Miller, Fuller, Gammon, Hopkins, Day, Mohsberg, Levy, Fawcett, Wilkerson, and Dalby families.

her neighbors. The Fawcetts next to us are talking of moving away from that home but where they will go I know not. Mrs Burgess is not in good health, but is usually up and at work- Since Col Wilkerson opened a bakery she does not sell as much bread as before. Mr Barrow is still with her. Old Col Dalby and his son Eddie still occupy the near end of the Prize house and although the old man grunts much yet he is looking spry- He may make eyes at Cats as she goes to + comes from school, but if he does he has'nt yet told his love. He often asks after you and may be sighing for your return. Mrs Smith the milliner is having a new room put to her house, which I know was needed- How so many have lived in that home I cannot tell- She took a [$]2000 Life Policy with me since my return and I am therefore more interested than ever in her good health- She will leave tomorrow for the north to buy her spring stock- Mrs Ed Lyon is quite well in fact is looking better than I have seen her for some times She [doesn't?] attend church now and only goes out after tea to see grandpa Zack. Dr Durham has been sick but is out again. Mrs Durham + the boys are all up- You will be glad to know they are having a new porch built to their house- All the vines + lattice have been torn away and there is an appearance of breathing room about the house. Old sister Hopkins has a goodly supply of boarders and I suppose is therefore happy. Mrs. Wm Halliburton continues to grow fat and keeps in good health. Since the Choir has moved to the gallery I dont get a chance to see the lady Halliburtons. Miss Janey is now at Winston visiting a Miss Watkins + expects to spend the year in Western N.C. visiting relations. She will doubtless have a more pleasant time than at home. Pride Lyon + wife have settled down to be "old folks at home" + I see very little of them- Mrs Dr Battle has a few boarders, but I guess
