Dear Richard,

Your letter came to hand yesterday, and read with care. I hav'nt bot. any tobacco for a week having used up the money you left for that purpose. Brakes (???) have been light the past week with but little change in prices, which are ranging very low on common grades. It seems to me, there ought to be money in the stock we have. It has changed a good dial [sic], since hanging it. Dont (Correction: don't) know what to go at if we stop buying. I dont (Correction: don't) believe this crop with a few exceptions is going to bring any more money than frosted crop of 81. I noticed Blackwell was in town last Monday. I hav'nt seen him since. I can hardly tell how the trouble occured [sic]. It seems as if his Negro wife had a fight or rather gave a widow lady by the name
