Title: Letter from Mattie Logan Southgate Jones to Thomas Decatur Jones, August 10, 1889
Author: Mattie Logan Southgate Jones
Date: 18890810
Note: Mattie Southgate Jones writes her husband Thomas Decatur Jones conveying her happiness that he arrived at his destination safely. She reports that their son Decatur slept fitfully and continues to talk "insesently" about his absent father. She details her domestic chores and forwards news from A.S. DeVlarming, her husband's bookkeeper, about the Jones tobacco enterprise. She notes that the local newspaper, the Sun, published a lengthy personal about Thomas. She closes with a request that Thomas send news through his correspondence.

altogether so lonesome-I occupied your room and gave the babies up to Lessie, but Decatur waked at 12 ock (Expanded: o'clock) and stayed wake untill (Correction: until) 4-talking about Papa insesently (Correction: incessently) & keeps it up today-so I can not lose sight of your absence for one minute. I have had the house turned up side down today, cleaning and [airing?] the beds and pillows but a hevy (Correction: heavy) shower came up and interfered to some extent but will get through with it today & then I will go down and buy some pins hairpins &c, in case you send for us-but don't write for me to come just from sake of duty-for it is too much expence (Correction: expense) and so little good for you, so long as you have such good attention now I am so glad Bettie did not disappoint you-as I was afraid from her letter-tell her to be sure and write me every day how you are getting on
