Note: James Southgate details his visit to the Yorktown Centennial and his shopping expedition in Richmond to his daughter, Mattie Southgate, who attends boarding school in Staunton, Virginia. In relating news from Durham, James describes his daughter Annie Southgate's recovery from typhoid fever, provides details of Mollie Day's failed courtship, preparations for the Methodist Church Conference and news about Durham neighbors and family. James Southgate also inquires of Mattie's schooling, her teacher, Lizzie Daniels, and advises her to strive for excellence, especially in her penmanship.

time this winter reading so many nice books- I hope Miss Lizzie Daniels has returned + [is] ready to give you thorough drilling in vocalization- You must try to beat all in singing this session + perhaps you can take a medal in it next year- I had a good time at Yorktown Saw the W[?] + his wife and more soldiers than I have seen at one time since the war- I heard a Staunton Company was expected there but I didn't see any of the Staunton Soldiers- I looked for Dr Berkeley but could'nt [sic] find him- I saw Judge Christian in Richmond- He said he tried to get a chance to call on you but could'nt [sic] find time- He was trying to finish up the business of the court so he could attend the Yorktown Centennial. I bought Annie 2 dresses + a bonnet in Richmond Also mother a dress + they seem much pleased with my selections- Aunt [Hunter] + Lessie were very well at the last accounts we had from them. I fear Cats will become so much attached to Texas she will not want to come home any more- Will Allen has left for Florida and is not coming back to Durham any more- Miss Mollie Day told him no + he said well he would'nt [sic] return unless she would promise to marry him but she backed her Ears + "axed" him no- Poor fellow- I guess he went off sad + gloomy- W H McCabe who used to Clerk for Cox + Co + then for Mohsberg is clerk in Allen's place in my office- Miss Maggie Fuller has returned
