Southgate, sends news to his Durham household from Richmond, Virginia where the elder Southgate seeks medical care for his ailments. James describes the visits with friends, and the medical treatment he is receiving from his physician. James H. Southgate closes the letter with a postscript that describes the "Retreat for the Sick" and its costs. This letter was written on J.
