Mattie refers to Minnie Moore, another school friend from Durham. She mentions the Methodist Episcopal Church, South Annual Conference, which was held in Durham, North Carolina in November 1881, and asks that her family send her a care package for Christmas.

she sent north for she is more sociable every day-I want a grand box Christmas so you may begin to fix it now. I mean first as soon as you get my confrence [sic] box off. dont fail to send it for I am just living off of hopes. The Walking bell has wrung and must stop my letter. Please write soon and often. How I would appreciate a long letter from Bud. Tell Mama and Aunt Sarah to write to me. Love to all the Boys and friends.
