Title: Letter from James Haywood Southgate to Mattie Logan Southgate, April 6, 1882
Author: James Haywood Southgate
Date: 18820406
Note: James Haywood Southgate sends his sister Mattie Logan Southgate a humorous letter and photograph. James provides an immodest analysis of his physical features by comparing them with those of nineteenth-century luminaries. "You will doubtless note the appearance of that Classic brow, that Websterian mouth, that Clay cut ear, that Calhoun nasal organ . . . ." He commends Mattie on her academic progress at the Wesleyan Female Institute, particularly her improvement in painting, and offers that he might be able to visit her in Staunton, Virginia.

My dear Matt:

I have little time in which to write what is called a letter, but will take this opportunity to Enclose a photo of myself, for your Distinguished consideration.

You will doubtless note the appearance of that Classic brow; that Websterian mouth; that Clay cut ear; that Calhoun nasal organ +c +c.- all of which I hope may please you, to say the least.

Your last report was far ahead of any one previous and from it I am led to believe that you will come our all right in Time. I may come to Staunton to see you at that time, but now it is very uncertain. I am well pleased with your improvement in painting, and hope you will be able to give it much attention. We are all very well- Write often to your Loving Bro'
