Dear Sir: --

I have concluded a contract with E. J. Manuk of Cairo for all Egypt and Malta for the use of the Bonsack Machines, he paying 20c per M cigarettes and finding his own operator and paying all other charges and expense, we netting 20c per M. I undertake to furnish him an operator whose salary will not exceed $60.00 per month and if we have to pay more than that, we have to pay the excess. This only for a few months to train local operators. He is to pay $100.00 towards the passage of the operator. I am enroute for the Cape of Good Hope and gave him your name so that if he requires an operator soon he could write you, as it would be so long before he can reach me. Should he order an operator, send him by the Italian Line on a through ticket to Alexandria. He can then proceed by rail from Alexandria to Cairo. W. O. Smith & Co. will secure tickets, etc. for him. The operatives scared out all the manufacturers and broke off all negotiations looking to a sale of the monopoly or a part thereof, and our manufacturer who entered into a contract and had a machine put in his place ready for work, backed out under threats from his operatives. If you can have tubes made to make the large oval cigarettes and reduce the lap to half what it is at present, I think Egypt can be made a good field for us. Manuk is worth $100,000.00 or over and is a
