Delia describes her husband James Southgate's health problems, her daughter Lessie's adventures in Texas and her son Jimmie's travel to the seashore. She also inquires whether Mattie received gifts of clothing and money that she sent and promises to ship another box for Christmas.

Mr Vaughn went to church with Annie last sabbath evening. on returning spent an hour or two- during his stay- He enquired so much about Miss Mattie + Miss Lessie that I think Annie was [sorter?] jealous!! [Jhorttons?]- Charles + Tom Mosely- [Mr Jas?] + all your friends are busy making inquiries about [you?] girls-

Jimmie is still on the Seashore. Too warm for sporting to do much good.

Your Aunt Mary [Beckwith?] has sent us a barrel of elegant apples. Shall send you some before long- Charlie Barley + Stuart are speaking of coming up about Xmas- I fear for those boys to come to Durham- + w'd prefer their taking another place + [wrote?]. Charlie Soon sends love to Mattie + asks me if I will let you go to China!!! Annie I think is his favorite!!

Lessie is still well + happy. I'll send her letters. Write her often- the poor child is so far off from us all. I tremble for her No home hearts to cheer + comfort her- Bishop Pierce says he heard all thro' Texas of her grand exploits- + never once thought of me as her mother.

Papa's condition is much improved. He suffers with Kidney effections- it alarms me terribly- I must close now darling. Expect to spend the day 15th just D.V. with Mrs J. S. Learr. + [All so?] pleasantly goodnight God bless you with his holy love + tenderness. Now + forever. All send love + messages- Your devoted mother
