In relating news from Durham, James describes his daughter Annie Southgate's recovery from typhoid fever, provides details of Mollie Day's failed courtship, preparations for the Methodist Church Conference and news about Durham neighbors and family. James Southgate also inquires of Mattie's schooling, her teacher, Lizzie Daniels, and advises her to strive for excellence, especially in her penmanship. Your last letter to me came thurs while I was gone to Yorktown which accounts for my not answering sooner- Since my return I have been quite busy, as always, after an absence of a week from the office-so many things accumulate which need attention- Annie has been sick in bed for several days with Enteric [typhoid] fever as the Doctor calls it-but we think she is convalescent now + hope she will be up + about in a day or two- I believe Miss Bryant is at work on your black dress, which you should have taken with you by all means- It may be weeks before she gets it ready- You had better drop her a Postal by way of hurrying her up- If you have no winter flannel you had better purchase them in Staunton + send me the bill- It will save the freight- Say to Dr Harris I will send him a check soon after 18th November which I know will be satisfactory to him- We are busy now fixing for [Conference] which will soon be here- Our library + books have come from Norfolk and Annie says she will have a good
