Title: Letter from leland Sneed to Mattie Logan Southgate, April 4, 1883
Author: Leland Sneed
Date: 18830404
Note: Writing under her nickname "S. Eddie," Leland Sneed sends news to her friend Mattie Southgate ("Old Tom') about the parties and dances that she attends near her home in Bellevue, Virginia. She tells Mattie about the boys--Will Page, Jim White, and Steve Carpenter-- who traveled from Red Hill for the dances and reports on Mettie Rickett's courting. Leland reveals that she and her friend Byrdie Townley spied on Mettie and her beaux. In response to the eavesdropping, the courting couple whipped their friends with a cowhide.

that she commenced wealding (Correction: wielding) the cow-hide & of all the whippings I ever got in my life that was the worst. You would have hurt yourself laughing to have seen B [Byrdie] & myself soothing each others [sic] whelps-we have our fill of listening at courting couples.

I think I've bored you enough with this long recital so I'll let that end the programe for this time. Do please write soon & se[nd] long, long letter to your devoted old father.

S. Eddie
I red'd an invitation to a large German [word omitted] at the University last Monday night but Mamma wouldn't let me go. How in the world did you happen to make with so [?] mistake write to each other? It is certainly the 1st MARCH I referred to my diary I am thinking it will be many a year yet before I will be writing you about my little "Boys" How are you & Stokes getting on? Yes I've been accused of being a flirt so often here lately that I am afraid I am one. Miss Lizzie sends love & says tell Lessie to be sure to write to her.
