Durham (N.C.) It is not long since I wrote you, yet how much of sorrow has come into my life! When everything seemed most propitious for our happiness Death came unawares [?] & took our dear Mother. She went on a visit to my brother in Fla. & after a weeks absence a messenger brought news of her death. She was buried in the country in Bainbridge on 23rd. She did not suffer much nor long.-weakness & congestion of the stomach.
