Note: James Southgate sends his daughter, Mattie Logan Southgate spending money so that she can pay her bills and purchase winter flannel. He plans to have C. B. Green and G. E. Webb forward Durham's main newspapers--the Daily Tobacco Plant and Durham Recorder-- so that she might read about the proceedings of the North Carolina Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South's Annual Conference. The Southgate family hosts a number of Conference attendees who travel to Durham for the event. This letter is written on stationery from the Office of James Southgate, General, Fire, Insurance an Commission Agent.

My dear Mattie

I enclose $10 + wish you to pay the enclosed bill of Hunter + Co + return it to me receipted- Also purchase winter Flannel + put it on if you have not such already- All are well except myself- I am ailing as usual + have been poorly [sic] for several days- I told C. B. Green + G. E. Webb to send you the Daily Plant+ Recorder that you might see the proceedings of the Conference each day- We had a grand time + good eating- Nearly 30 at each meal besides our own household- Annie said she would write you, but I dont [sic] depend much on any of them for writing I have but little time + you must be satisfied with [a] short letter
