Dear Sir:

I was inexpressibly pained to receive the telegram which I forwarded to you on Saturday last, advising you of the illness of your child, but was very much shocked to receive the telegram of Sunday advising me of its death. Being a father myself, I can appreciate fully the blow that has fallen upon you, having had to bury my first born, after having nursed it for nearly two years and allowed myself to become deeply attached to it. These blows when they come, seem hard, and it is almost impossible to reconsile (Correction: reconcile) ourselves to the words of comfort that are poured into our ears by those who take the Scripture as their excuse for everything. You did not mention before you went to the Springs that your child was at all sick, but from what you have told me at various times, I suppose that it is best, as it is, for the little thing has certainly suffered and is now at rest. I forward you to-day several letters, as instructed in your note which I got at the hotel assuring you of both the sympathy of myself and wife in your bereavement, I am,

Very Sincerely Your Friend,

A. T. Powell
